How to Access Blocked Websites in Ukraine

Internet content restrictions exist in many countries, and Ukraine is no exception. Since 2017, Ukrainian authorities have blocked a number of websites — including Russian social media platforms, news sites, and other services — citing national security concerns. If you need to access restricted content for legitimate purposes, here are the most effective methods available.

Why Are Websites Blocked in Ukraine?

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has the authority to order ISPs to block specific websites. Blocks are commonly applied to:

  • Russian social media platforms (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki)
  • Russian search engines and services (Yandex, Mail.ru)
  • Sites deemed to spread misinformation or threaten national security
  • Certain news outlets and media resources

ISPs implement blocks primarily at the DNS level, meaning they can often be bypassed by changing how your device resolves domain names.

Method 1: Use a VPN (Most Recommended)

A Virtual Private Network is the most reliable and secure way to bypass website blocks. When you connect to a VPN server in another country, your traffic appears to originate from that location, and your ISP's blocks no longer apply.

How to use a VPN:

  1. Subscribe to a reputable VPN service (see our comparison guide)
  2. Download and install the app on your device
  3. Connect to a server in a country without the restriction
  4. Browse freely — your connection is also encrypted for added security

Method 2: Change Your DNS Server

Since many blocks in Ukraine operate at the DNS level, simply switching to a public DNS server can restore access to many blocked sites.

Popular free DNS options:

  • Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  • OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

You can change DNS settings in your device's network configuration or on your home router to apply it to all connected devices.

Method 3: Use the Tor Browser

The Tor Browser routes your traffic through a network of volunteer-operated nodes, making it nearly impossible to trace. It can bypass most censorship systems effectively. The trade-off is significantly slower browsing speeds, making it better suited for text-based browsing rather than video streaming.

Method 4: Browser Extensions with Built-in Proxies

Several browser extensions offer quick access to bypass tools:

  • Psiphon — a free censorship circumvention tool
  • Lantern — peer-to-peer tool designed for open internet access
  • Built-in VPN in the Opera browser (limited but free)

Note that browser-based solutions only protect your browser traffic, not other applications on your device.

Important Considerations

Always use these methods responsibly and for legitimate purposes. A VPN remains the best overall solution — it combines effectiveness, reasonable speeds, and full device protection while also encrypting your entire internet connection.
